Custom Curriculum

If you are looking to create a class for a homeschool group, a pod or an after school program here is a sample of the classes I have taught.

Improv

Using a combination of traditional skill building improvisation and modern improv games we create an ensemble of confident quick thinkers. Students learn to use their bodies, voice and imagination to express characters and story. We explore gibberish, how our bodies can shape our characters, "interview" games and telling a story to encourage confidence, public speaking, quick thinking and creative dramatic expression.

Acting Shakespeare

Using a combination of original text and narration, students build a love of Shakespeare by performing it as actors. We explore these timeless stories and amazing language and find ways to translate the stories into meaningful themes from today.

Public Speaking

Destroy the fear of speaking in public in a fun lighthearted environment. I use improv games to open them up to each other as a group, then we will explore different types of speeches: demonstrative, informative and impromptu. We will also create a You Tube- style show.

Storytelling

This is a great class for early and pre-readers. K-2 Using dramatic expression, students will work in groups to retell fairy tales and traditional stories. We will explore all the elements of storytelling: setting, character and plot. Builds confidence and dramatic expression.

How we do Shakespeare

We feel like Shakespeare was meant to be said, not read.  We want kids to know the stories and get experience with some of the language.  We use edited scripts roughly 30 mins in length. We use some narration and some dialogue. This gives the students a positive experience without it feeling too overwhelming.

Our focus is to create a fun easy-going atmosphere where students can LOVE Shakespeare's plays and be actively involved in the production of the play. They help with interpretation or modernization, they help with costumes and make-up and sets. It is very play-based and kid driven.  We are not here to be the Royal Shakespeare Company, we're here to encourage creativity and ownership of their experience.

Shakespeare was meant to be said, not read.
— Ms. Pauley

In the class we will work on building an ensemble.  We will discuss the play, it's characters and themes.  We will go though the script line by line "translating" from Elizabethan english to modern english.  It is important to fully understand what they are communicating. We will talk a little about how language changes over time. We will cast, block, costume and design the play and perform it at the end of the class.

Seems like a lot to do in just a few weeks, but I keep things fun and light so they have no idea how much they are really learning.
